This
research project aims to understand the social construction of the tourism
market in Aracaju through a case study of proprietors of beach bars and
restaurants situated along the southern coastline of Aracaju. This research project
uses economic sociology to understand the creation of a tourism market of beach
bars and restaurants seen as a result of processes of cultural and moral
categorization and classification by its proprietors. Three research plans were
elaborated to delimit the scope of the analysis: the
first develops literature review for the foundation of an economic sociology of
tourism. The second identifies the proprietors, focusing on their structures of
capital and worldviews. The third analyses the impact of the online technology TripAdvisor in changing their attitudes
and cognitions about their business. The main contribution of this research
project comes from the particular study of beach bar proprietors, leading to a
better understanding of the tourism market construction logic, considering the
market as a moral construction.
Research Areas: (a) Economic Sociology: the social construction of markets and (2) Sociology of Valuation and Evaluation: social construction of valuation and evaluation metrics.
